How do ground source heat pumps work?

How do ground source heat pumps work?

Ground source heat pumps use pipes that are buried underneath the ground to extract the natural heat which occurs in the ground. The now fluid form of the heat is then passed through a compressor that raises it to a high temperature, as by default the heat found underneath the ground isn’t hot enough to heat your home. Once the heat is at the desired temperature, it is then ready to be sent to your home to heat up your radiator or underfloor heating.

The heat which isn’t used is stored in a hot water cylinder, which can be used for baths, taps and showers. This process is continued as the cooled ground loop fluid is passed back underneath the ground, where further heat is absorbed from the ground and used again for heating up your home when required. A ground source heat pump can increase the temperature from the ground to around 50 degrees.
