MCR Gas Engineer teamed up with Ideal Heating and Citizen’s Advice to provide heat to an elderly couple living on the poverty line after being taken advantage of by their provider from 2012-2019.

Maggie, Dave, and parrot Cheeky Chops live in Sale, Manchester and have done for the best of 60 years. Dave suffers from multiple medical conditions including Cardiovascular disease and a partial amputation of the foot and Maggie is his full-time unpaid carer. 

The issues with the boiler began in 2012 as the couple were signed up to a boiler cover and servicing plan for £6 a month, what their provider failed to notify the couple was the boiler inside the property was not serviceable by them. In 2019 when the couple required an engineer, the provider sent someone out who swiftly told them that despite their boiler cover plan, they would not be completing the required works and condemned the boiler.

“If they had just asked what kind of boiler we had and told us they were unable to service this type, we would never have taken the boiler protection plan out”

Following this visit, the couple was charged £90 for the call-out fee. Including the years of care plan payments, the provider had taken a total of £666 from the couple. All of this for a condemned boiler. 

The following two years followed with both Dave and Maggie trying everything to get the house warm. When I spoke to Dave he explained that his health conditions, arthritis, history of heart attacks, false eye, and cardiovascular disease just to name a few, had been affected by the 2021 winter when he was forced to remain in bed all day to the ‘freezing’ nature of the house. 

To us, this is unacceptable. 

Boiler manufacturer Ideal Heating had been asked by Citizen’s Advice if they could find a local heating service to do a full boiler install to get the household up and running again they came to us. Our longstanding relationship with Ideal and our passion for the local community meant accepting this job was a no-brainer. Our Gas Engineers Dan and Chris were accompanied by Creative Content Manager Rosella on Wednesday 2nd November to complete the installation. 

The job in itself was a standard decommission and install, after turning the water and gas off we removed the old boiler which had partly rusted away, Dan then got to work securing the boiler to the wall and cleaning up the pipe work. Gas engineer Chris’s job was to repipe the gas access around the house and in through the wall.

This couple told our gas engineer that for the past two years they had been solely living in the bedroom to keep each other warm, in the last year their bedroom also became home to Cheeky Chops the parrot since Dave found him shivering in the living room. 

Once the work was completed we were met with such genuine gratefulness, Maggie gushed that

“It’s absolutely wonderful, I can’t believe all that you’ve done in such a short space of time”
